Children photography at the Museum of Transport, London
Central London with a toddler can be slightly daunting for a family until you realise there is a fantastic museum right in the heart of the city that is perfect for little people (and older ones too!): the Transport Museum of London, in Covent Garden.
Before going, I was sceptical about it: first because of the adult ticket price (£17.50 in 2018) but then I realised that kids go free and also that you pay the adult fee once and you can come back as many time for free for a whole year, which makes it suddenly a brilliant offer.
Secondly: the topic itself: transport: is it just buses and cars to look at? Well, yes and no. They’ve made it into a great place that is spacious, interactive and ideal to let the kids’ imagination go wild while they pretend to be a bus or a Tube train driver. Whether you're 2 or 42, somehow it's always fun to go at the top of an old double-decker bus, wouldn't you agree?
For us, adults, it’s actually fascinating. Of course, I didn’t have time to read all the (probably) interesting facts about the history of transport in London (I can’t read anything in museums since having a child) but with all the visual clues, you can feel slightly more knowledgeable when you come out than when you went in. You can sit in some of the oldest tube trains and imagine what it was like to travel through London back in the days.
I realised it's a fantastic place for family photography; because of the many distractions and activities, it is ideal to capture children's natural curiosity and mesmerised expressions.
Kids can press the button to cross a street, like in real life (they can press it 1,000 times like in real life too!).
There’s a young children area too with a role play section and even a wooden train track to play with.
If you visit the Transport Museum during the weekend, I would recommend you get in early as crowds gather pretty fast from 11am onwards. There’s a buggy park at the entrance and a cool shop at the end. And after your visit, you’ll be spoilt for choice for lunch options.
